Young Homesteaders

Young Homesteaders is a play and skills based program for children ages 8-12.

We focus on crop and animal care, farm operations, farm to table food preparation, and building community.

This program runs on Tuesdays from 10am - 2pm.

Fall session is September 8th through November 10th.

The Details:

In this program we co create with the kids. We have seasonal activities that are staples/traditions like apple picking and apple sauce or pie making, bread and butter making, ketchup and French fry making, farm school Olympics (a day of fun farm based games), and equipment care. We also take suggestions from the kids and try to incorporate them into the program. The French fry idea came from the kids and farm school Olympics was inspired by a group who were often seeking competitive play during free time.

Our day includes:

  • Morning free play and movement games (often some form of tag)

  • Snack break

  • Community circle

  • Morning chores (animal care, egg collection, and other tasks)

  • Lunch/free time

  • Daily activity

We have a lot of fun and have a good mix of kids that have returned year over year who are good leaders and mentors and others that are new.

All materials are provided, though children need to bring their own lunches. The maximum ratio of teachers to students is 2:16.

The cost of the program is $450 for 10 weeks. This is payable by e-transfer and required to confirm your spot.

Additional Notes:

We require that children wear closed toed shoes. Running shoes will do and rain boots are recommended if there has been any rain at all. Otherwise, the children do need to bring their own lunches and beverages, and any bug spray or sunscreen that you may wish for them to use. We don't have a lot of mosquitoes but they do occasionally come around. Our main play area is fully shaded but we are in full sun for parts of the day. We recommend that they also bring a full change of clothing, just in case, and that you keep in mind that the farm is often quite breezy and can be cooler that it might be in other areas of the county.
